Hanson
www.d.little-canada.mn.us
MEMORANDUM
To: Mayor Blesener & Members of City Council
From: Bill Dircks, Public Works Superintendent
Date: January 19, 2006
Re: Generator Information
Staff has obtained quotes for the purchase of a 100kW, trailer - mounted, portable
generator and quotes for a transfer switch installation at city hall for connection to a
portable generator.
100 kW Generator:
We received quotes from Ziegler Power Systems and Powerhouse Systems. Both quoted
prices for both new and used models. Ziegler quoted $35,000 for a new generator and
$30,000 for a used generator from their rental fleet with the guarantee that that it would
have fewer than 5000 hours of use. In addition, whichever unit chosen would require
plugs and additional hardware for the interface of the generator with our existing lift
stations and city hall. That hardware was quoted at $5000 extra. All prices listed do not
include sales tax. The Powerhouse quote had not been received but will be available for
the meeting Wednesday night.
Staff would recommend purchasing a new generator from the low bidder unless there is a
used generator available that has a small amount of hours of use on it. The used
generators are from rental fleets and have been put through hard use. They are generally
more heavy duty as they are built with the understanding that they will get hard use out of
them. The used generators also run slightly quieter — 69 decibels at 23 feet from the
generator compared to 72 decibels at 23 feet for a new generator. Either way, the total
will remain under the $50,000 competitive bid amount.
