Memo - L -SING G- TISSOCI-RT -ES TO: Mayor Blesener & Members of the City Council FROM: Lee Elfering, City Engineer DATE: May 20, 2005 RE: Trail Project Change Order The 2004 Trail Project included the proposed installation of bituminous trail along Country Drive between Little Canada Road and the waterworks trail to the north. Due to the trails location in front of businesses, its visibility from the street, and the existing grades we are recommending that the 8 -foot bituminous trail be revised to a 6 -foot concrete walk. A site review also highlighted current erosion problems on the slope down to the waterworks trail just north of the Quicksilver driveway. Disruption of this slope due to the construction will increase the erosion potential and make the area a continuing maintenance problem. It is our recommendation that that some additional storm sewer piping and rip -rap be added to convey the storm water to the bottom of the slope within a storm pipe to minimize the potential for erosion. The additional cost for the added storm sewer and changing the bituminous trail to a concrete sidewalk will increase the contract amount by approximately $8,500. In review of the trail system in the area around Little Canada Road and Country Drive there remains an existing bituminous path section and a small section of narrow sidewalk along Little Canada Road that has never been improved. The area is shown on the attached exhibit. Due to the proximity of the Country Drive trail work we believe that completing a concrete sidewalk of consistent width thru this area could be done at this time for a reasonable price and would provide a finished trail /sidewalk system for the area. The work would include the removal of approximately 375 -feet of bituminous trail and 52 -feet of concrete sidewalk. The entire length would be replaced with 8 -foot concrete walk to match the sidewalk on both ends of the replacement. The anticipated cost of this work would be approximately $13,200.00 We have requested quotes from the Contractor to complete the additional work described above, but have not received them to date. It is anticipated that the quotes will be received by the City Council meeting in order to provide the actual costs.
