MINUTES
PLANNING. COMMISSION
MARCH 11, 2004
the Council should authorize the expenditure of costs for fi.trther study of
this issue.
The City Planner suggested that he do further study of the issue and bring
a report back to the Commission at its next meeting. He also suggested
that the Code Enforcement Officer do an inventory of signage as relates to
the Aldi request and that that information will be presented to the
Commission at its next meeting.
Weihe suggested that the Planner's study include a review of Architectural
Guidelines as related to signage. Barraclough asked for information as to
what other cities allow as relates to the Aldi request.
The Planner felt it was common for suburban cities to allow one sign per
street frontage and one pylon sign. The Planner noted that the Aldi
property is not technically a corner lot, but noted that there is a through
road to the Bally's property.
Barraclough suggested that an ordinance amendment could be structured
to allow the Aldi property to be considered a corner lot given the through
drive to Bally's. The Planner noted that the current Code does not allow
for one sign per street frontage plus a pylon.
Anesi indicated that the four other Minnesota cities where Aldi's is
constructing stores are all allowing two wall signs plus one pylon sign.
Anesi reported that had they realized they would only be allowed one wall
sign, the front of the building would have been designed differently.
Keis recommending tabling action on the Variance from the Sign
Ordinance to allow two building signs plus one pylon sign for Aldi Foods
at 2350 Rice Street until the April 8, 2004 Commission meeting pending
additional research from the City Planner, a sign inventory from the Code
Enforcement Officer, and comments from the City Council.
Motion seconder( by Weihe.
Motion carried 5 — 0.
FORBES Mr. Mike O'Brien, representing Mary Forbes, appeared before the
PROPERTY Commission requesting approval of a property division dividing property
DIVISION — at 601 East County Road B -2 into two single-family lots.
