Little Canada
Fire Department, Inc.
325 Little Canada Road East Office: (651) 766 -4057
Little Canada, Minnesota 55117 Fax: (651) 766 -4092
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey and Members of the City Council
Joel Hanson, City Administrator
FROM: Jim Morelan, Fire Chief
DATE: June 17, 2004
RE: Residential Building Setback Requirements
Gordie Howe of Masterpiece Homes contacted me earlier this week asking for my opinion regarding
side yard setback requirements for single- family homes in the City. As a result, I discussed the issue
with the City Fire Marshal, and he concurs with my following opinion.
It is evident from a fire protection standpoint that the larger the space between structures, the easier it
is to control fire spread from one structure to another. The existing 20 -foot separation between
single- family homes (10 -foot side yard setbacks) is a distance that provides a satisfactory distance to
control fire spread. Likewise, the 15 -foot separation proposed in the Text Amendment presented by
the City Planner would do the same and would not significantly impact the ability of the Fire
Department to control the spread of fire from one structure to another.
In summary, I would not object to adoption of the Text Amendment as presented by the City Planner.
cc: Gordie Howe, Masterpiece Homes
Duane Williams, Fire Marshal
