File No. KX- 04-404
County Attorney File No. 2022444
and
Re: State of Minnesota vs. Robert Vincent Larson
Court File No. K8-04 -0403
County Attorney File No. 2022440
Dear Sheriff Pletcher:
Defendants in the above - entitled matters were charged with and ultimately convicted of Murder
in the First Degree, Gary Gibbs, Tom Paget and Tom Rudenick of the General Investigations
Unit investigated this case. Richard Auge assisted with crime lab work.
The Defendants, the victim and all of the major witnesses were metbamphetamine users. They,
for the most part, had no jobs or permanent addresses and little motivation to assist police or the
prosecution. This case required a tremendous amount of effort on the part of Officers Gibbs and
Paget to befriend and keep track of these numerous drug -using witnesses. They did an
exceptional job.
Tom Rudenick obtained physical evidence such as surveillance tapes that corroborated what the
State's witnesses had told police. He spent considerable time formatting these in a manner that
made them presentable at trial. His professionalism and command of the facts of the case when
he testified impressed not only the jurors, but also the attorneys. This required extensive
preparation on his part and it was greatly appreciated.
Even though the crime lab work at the scene was done by the BCA, Richard Auge assisted
Sheriff's deputies in their continuing investigation. In doing so, he found the two items of
physical evidence that ultimately proved at trial that the Defendants' murdered the victim. He
also came to trial thoroughly prepared in his testimony.
