SHURGARD
September 26, 2004
To the Members of the City Council of Little Canada:
Minneapolis North District Office
2825 Hedberg Drive
Minnetonka, Minnesota 55305
Phone 952 345 0192
Fax 952 345 0194
www.shurgard.com
This request for a signage variance is for 3 directional signs to help a potential customer
locate the business rental office. Directional signage is needed due to confusion caused
by a expansion in 1996 that located a section of the business at the curb of County Road
B while the business office is locates[ at the bottom of grade approximately 200. from the
curb.
Sign Number 1 would be located on the existing building structure to guide those that use
the wrong drive entrance. It measures 3'x 3' (9 Square feet).
Sign number 2 ( the most critical of the 3) would be locates[ between the pylon leas of the
existing sign structure in a position where a phone number panel now exists. It would be
non illuminated and would measure 6"/2" x 6"/2" (36.6 square feet).
Sign number 3 would be located on a fence adjacent to the rental business office. It
would measure 6' x 3' (18 square feet).
Use of directional signage would facilitate the arrival of the customer at the business
office instead of a locked storage building. The Pylon sign in particular would promote
the public welfare by clearly indicating where the business entrance is located. Currently
there are 2 driveways adjacent to each other. A customer who is misdirected to the wrong
entrance must make a u turn exiting one driveway and entering the next. In essence a
vehicle is driving on the wrong side of the street to make this maneuver. Secondly a car
exiting may not be prepared to avoid a car in such close proximity to their traffic lane.
Respectfully submitted,
Mike Justak
District Manager
Shurgard MNNorth District
