November 18, 2002
Kathleen Weihe
2679 Schletty Drive
Little Canada, MN 55117
(651)484 -0197
To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing to express my interest in serving on the planning commission for the city of
Little Canada. 1 am a new resident of the community, having moved here in May of 2001.
My husband and I had our wedding in our new home on Schletty Drive. My step - daughter
attends Roseville Area High School as a 9th grader. I also have two grown children, a
daughter attending college in New Mexico, and a son at Century College.
Before my move to this area, I lived in a neighborhood in south Minneapolis for almost
twenty years, and served as a block club leader for several of those years. I also volunteered
extensively at the neighborhood elementary schools, Hale and Field, and served as the
secretary for the McRae Park cooperative nursery school parent board, as well as the
president of the neighborhood babysitting co -op. I also served as a church council member at
Mayflower UCC for three years.
I'm a strong believer in the benefits ofa community to the well -being of individuals and
families. My previous neighborhood (the corner of 48th Street and Chicago Avenue) grew
over the two decades I lived there from a sleepy area to a thriving, interesting place to catch a
good movie and eat out at several good restaurants. The neighbors stayed put, valuing the
care the businesses and families took toward our little area of the city. Many families raised
their children from infancy to adulthood in the Field- Regina neighborhood. There was a
great deal of support from the people in the neighborhood for new ventures. Meetings
regarding decisions about liquor licenses, parking lot situations, and alley -use restrictions
were well attended. It was a wonderful experience to live in an area that met the needs of
both its residents and the local business owners.
I'm happy to live in Little Canada, which seems to offer its residents many of the perks I've
grown used to. I've enjoyed discovering the community events which I'm sure help to mark
the seasons for the people who live here. It's a true pleasure to deliver my water /sewer bill to
the city center, just around the corner from my house. When I was married last summer, I
made the decision to use as many local businesses as I could. I was thrilled to find at the Red
Rose Florists a wonderful, helpful woman who delivered all the flowers to our home for the
ceremony. She has since moved to Burnsville (or Eagan ?), which mist have been a loss to
those of you who watch the comings and goings of the town's enterprises.
I work at home as a writer, and this year received a Minnesota State Arts Board fellowship to
support my work. I am interested in politics, particularly as it works at the local level. Being
the daughter ofa small - business owner in a small town, I appreciate some of the nitty - gritty
of local decision- making. Thank you for considering appointing me to serve on the Little
Canada planning commission.
Sincerely,
