1. Discontinue the DARE program now (2002/2003 school year) and have the Sheriff's
Department evaluate the possibility of providing for those jurisdictions who are still
interested (Vadnais Heights and White Bear Township).
2. Continue the DARE program through the 2002/2003 school year and use the $25,000 in
DARE funds to offset program costs proportionally among the contracting jurisdictions.
3. Continue the DARE program and absorb any cost shifts from school districts.
It would be ideal if our Council could take a position on one of these three options so a final decision on
the DARE program can be reached. Given the issues facing this program, I would recommend option #1.
I would also recommend we encourage the Sheriff's Department, with the assistance of the contract group
members, to develop another mechanism to involve law enforcement in our schools to aid in building a
positive relationship between our youth and law enforcement.
cc: George Altendorfer, RCSD
Dr. John Thein, Roseville Area Schools
Mary Kay Rowan, St. John's Principal
Contract Group Members
