Ce09a7latia
515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
(651) 766 -4029 / FAX: (651) 766 -4048
www.ci.little- canada.mn.us
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey & Members of the City Council
FROM: Greg Schroeder, Public Works Director
DATE: July 19, 2002
RE: Round Lake Pond - Little Canada Road Amenities
MAYOR
Michael 1. Fahey
COUNCIL
Beverly Sealze
Jim LaValle
Matt Anderson
Rick Montour
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
As you may know the Round Lake storm water pond and the area adjacent to the pond have not
been finalized. We are concerned about the appearance of this storm water pond and would like
to bring this area up to the standards of Lakeside Apartments and our adjacent City Street
project. Our agreement with the Lakeside Apartments obligates us to maintain a minimum of 3
feet of water in this pond. In addition we are concerned with the unsightly brown bath tube ring
appearance this pond has when the water level flucuates down. To resolve these problems we
are suggesting that we stabilize the pond water level by installing a well to fill the pond when
needed and establish vegetation in the pond that can tolerate water fluctuations. In addition we
have been unable to establish good quality grass around this area.
Stabilize the Water Level:
As indicated above we are obligated to maintain a minimum of 3 feet of water in this pond. We
are proposing to install a well system including controls and piping that automatically pump
water into this pond to maintain a stable water level. The estimated cost for this system is
$24,000.
Pond Vegetation:
I have contacted the Ramsey - Washington Metro Watershed District and requested their
assistance in establishing vegetation in the pond that will survive, tools good, be easy to maintain,
and not cost very much. They have informed me that for approximately $2,400 they can grow
the plant materials at the Ramsey County workhouse and help install the plants in the pond that
will meet our needs.
Area Grass
Due to the soils conditions, we have not been able to establish a good quality grass in the area
around the pond. We are proposing to place 2" of black dirt and hydo -seed this area at an
estimated cost of $8,040.
H: \GregS \Round Lake Costs.doc
