515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
(651) 766 -4029 / FAX: (651) 766 -4048
www.ci.little-canada.mn.us
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey & Members of the City Council
FROM: Joel Hanson, City Administrator
DATE: August 9, 2002
RE: Computer Purchases
MAYOR
Michael I. Fahey
COUNCIL
Beverly Scalze
Jima LaValle
Mali Anderson
Rick Montour
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
As you know, we provide for the purchase of a couple computers and related software in each year's
capital improvement budget. We made 2002's purchases earlier this year. Since then, we began
experiencing problems with our server. We were running out of space on the hard drive and it was
becoming an on -going maintenance problem. As a result, I directed our staff to purchase a new server as
well as one additional computer for the office staff. The cost of the server was $5,739.31. The cost for
the new workstation was $1,565.67. The total cost is $7,304.98. It was my opinion we could not wait for
the 2003 budget cycle to make this purchase. (It should be noted the old server and work station are
rotated to other users with less system demands and we then phase out the oldest equipment.
My recommendation is to amend the 2002 General Capital Improvement Budget (Fund 400) to authorize
these purchases with the understanding there will be no computer purchases in the 2003 budget.
