Hanson <br />www. ci.littl e- Canada. mn. us <br />MEMORANDUM <br />TO: Mayor Fahey & Members of the City Council <br />FROM: Joel Hanson, City Administrator <br />DATE: August 23, 2002 <br />RE: Housing Occupancy Standards <br />Pursuant to our recent discussion about the use of a single family home as a multiple family <br />dwelling unit in an R -1 zoning district, staff has been reviewing this matter in the context of our <br />current zoning code. Here are some of the relevant provisions for your consideration: <br />Definition of Boarding House — <br />A building other than a hotel where, for compensation and by pre - arrangement for <br />definite periods, meals or lodging and meals are provided to three (3) or more persons, <br />not of the principal family therein, pursuant to previous arrangements and not to anyone <br />who may apply, but not including a building providing these services for more than ten <br />(10) persons. <br />Definition of Apartment — <br />A room or suite of rooms which is designed for, intended for, or occupied as a residence <br />by a single family or an individual, and is equipped with cooking facilities. Includes <br />dwelling unit and efficiency unit. <br />Definition of Dwelling Unit — <br />A residential building or portion thereof intended for occupancy by a family, but not <br />including hotels, motels, nursing homes, seasonal cabins, boarding or rooming houses, <br />tourist homes or trailers. <br />Definition of Duplex, Triplex, and Quad — <br />A dwelling structure on a single lot, having two, three and four units, respectively, being <br />attached by common walls and each unit equipped with separate sleeping, cooking, <br />eating, living and sanitation facilities. <br />
