unlikely they would wait at a bench after disembarking from the bus in this scenario.
Therefore, benches would be of little use on the Little Canada side of Rice Street.
This is backed up by MTC's 1999 boarding figures which state that approximately 8
to 12 people board a bus at a total of 5 bus stop locations along this section of Rice
Street that are going north and 56 to 105 people board a bus at a total of 8 bus stop
locations going south.
Conclusion:
Based on the above it can be concluded that not very many people in Little Canada use
bus benches and there are bus benches along routes where most of the riders are getting
off the bus instead of boarding it.
Bus Bench Costs
U.S. Bench indicated that they charge $1.33 per day to cover:
1) the cost for the bench,
2) advertising on the bench and
3) maintenance of each bench and bench area.
This totals about $485 per year for each bench.
The benches the city installed along Little Canada Road cost the City about $700 each. Simpler
but durable benches like those in the attached diagram would cost between $460 and $540 each.
I do not have enough history to develop a detailed maintenance cost for each bench. However,
based on the daily charge U.S. Bench Corporation indicated above, I would roughly estimate the
maintenance cost to be between $0.15 and $0.50 per day per bench. This equates to about $55.00
to $183.00 a year per bench depending on the degree of maintenance.
Bus Bench Plan
Based on the above, there does not appear to be a high demand for bus benches in the City of
Little Canada. Therefore, staff is recommending a very simple plan for the City of Little Canada.
1. All existing private company benches within the city should be removed.
2. The city shall purchase and install courtesy benches on an "as requested basis" where
determined appropriate by staff.
That way we can ensure that benches are installed only at needed locations to best server the
residents of Little Canada. In addition, we can control the appearance of the benches installed.
Impact to City Budget
Based on the information above, it is estimated that the City of Little Canada would have to
install two bus benches this year at a capital budget cost of about $1,240 (One at the intersection
of LaBore Rd. and Desoto Street $540 and one at Little Canada Road and Middle Street $700).
Maintenance would cost about $366 per year from the operating budget.
I I Airegti3Signs313us ncneh Report.doc
