Hanson
www.ci.little- eanada.mn.us
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey & Members of the City Council
FROM: Joel Hanson, City Administrator
DATE: June 7, 2002
RE: Unweave the Weave Update
The open house for the Unweave the Weave project was held on June 6th at Vadnais Heights City Hall.
Attendance was excellent with over 300 people present. Staff was on site through out to answer any
questions we could and to take down comments from our residents.
MnDot did a good job in presenting detailed information about the proposed project. This information
included their proposal for the construction of sound barriers. While we gain barriers in key areas, I
believe some additional construction is warranted to properly serve our community. (See map attached)
Specifically, the area between Thunder Bay Road and Slumberland is unserved. Another area we need to
pay attention to is the Twin Lake area. Does the proposed wall go far enough to the east?
While MnDot has definite criteria by which decisions on wall placement are made, this is obviously are
best chance to address our long -term needs. I pointed out the fact that when the Heinel property develops,
the criteria would likely change. Their staff said then that the future developer should bear the cost of the
wall. I pointed out the lack of development in that area results in adjoining properties not having noise
impacts abated.
I am attempting to get a better map of the proposed walls for Wednesday evening. Subject to your
direction, we may want another workshop with MnDot to review this issue in greater detail after malting
them aware of our concerns. We may also want to have some form of hearing with the public to let them
know of any changes we can secure.
Your direction on this matter is appreciated.
