LITTLE CANADA
PARKS AND RECREATION
DEPARTMENT
515 Little Canada Road / Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
Telephone: (651) 766-4029 / Fax: (651) 766 -4048
TO:
FROM:
DATE:
RE:
MEMO
JIM MORELAN, Director
(651) 766 -4045
DON BOWMAN, Program Coordinator
(651) 766 -4041
DEREK ANDERSON, Program Coordinator
(651) 766 -4042
GREG HOAG, Parkkeeper
(651) 766 -4056
Mayor Fahey & Members of the City Council
Jim Morelan, Parks & Recreation Director
March 18, 2002
Parking Lot Security Lighting Pioneer Park
1 have been securing costs and working on a design for the lighting of the west side parking area
at Pioneer Park. From the City's experience with lighting on Little Canada Road, I have been
working with Xcel Energy on this project. Xcel's outdoor lighting division had originally
designed a lighting plan for the parking lot in October 2001 for a cost of $14,221 which included
six fixtures installed in the islands in the middle of the lot. This provided for a level of
illumination that was higher than what is necessary to achieve our lighting goal for the parking
lot. I then asked them to re- design the project with the main objective of providing ample
lighting to enable the park user to transition the park area to the parking lot after field or court
lighting had been turned off. This resulted in the following:
Three 25 -foot square steel poles with one 150 -watt high pressure sodium lamp on each
will be installed outside the edge of the lot. (This plan eliminates the cost of three light
fixtures as well as the underground boring costs associated with installing them in the
middle of the lot.) This design change results in a total cost of $9,776. This amount is
$776 over the previously approved budget amount of $9,000.
These lights will be maintained by Xcel Energy similar to the City's agreement regarding
the new street lighting on Little Canada Road. Cost of operating the three lights will be
$19.20 per month which is the same rate as the Little Canada Road lights.
We have chosen the Gullwing fixture by Gardco Lighting (see attached). This fixture
will do an excellent job of illumination while reducing the amount of light from being
"spilled" over to adjacent residential properties.
Staff recommends approval of the lighting project to be installed by Xcel Energy at a cost of
$9,776. Please contact the prior to the Council meeting for any additional information.
H: \KrisP \CORRESP \Kris' 2002 \Pioneer Parking Lot Security.doc
