Fahey
COUNCIL
Beverly Scalze
Jim LaValle
Matt Anderson
Rick Montour
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
The I -694 Architectural and Aesthetic Design Guidelines Committee has been meeting since
September 2001 to develop an architectural and aesthetic design theme for the I -694 corridor.
The corridor extends from the Mississippi River Bridge on the west to the I -94/I -494 interchange
on the east. The architectural and aesthetic design selected will provide a theme that will be
reflected in the appearance of bridges, railings, fences, retaining walls, and noise walls
constructed throughout this corridor. In addition, the architectural and aesthetic design selected
will be able to be modified slightly to reflect the individuality of each city that these structures
are built in.
The Edgerton Street Bridge is part of the overall project, "Unweave the Weave ", the
reconstruction of the I -35E and I -694 interchange. As you my recall, the Edgerton Street Bridge
reconstruction is the first bridge along the corridor to be designed and constructed, and is
currently scheduled for letting in May 2003. Several key aesthetic design decisions will have to
be made early in the planning process in order to provide enough detail to complete the design of
the bridge and accommodate this schedule. It should be noted that this date has been slipped
from 2002 as a result of profile /real estate impacts for this project. MNDOT is looking at the
possibility of raising the profile (elevation) of the new Edgerton Street Bridge 2 to 4 feet higher
than the existing bridge. This profile raise is a result of the size of the support beams needed for
the new bridge and the final road surface elevation of I -694 under this bridge. If this bridge is
raised 4 feet it will require the raising of the County Road D /Edgerton Street intersection. In
addition, it will raise the profile of Country Road D 500 feet in both directions, as well as, raise
the profile on Edgerton Street 500 to 1,000 feet to the south. A possible benefit of raising
Edgerton Street is that it will enhance the possibility of a Little Canada trail under Edgerton
Street by the power lines to the south. As a side note, the Unweave the Weave project is
currently schedule to start in 2005 and go through 2007 and the Rice Street Bridge over 1 -694 is
cun-ently scheduled for reconstruction in 2004 through 2005.
H:AOregSV[ -694 Architectual & Aesthetic Design.doc
