Fahey
COUNCIL.
Beverly Scalze
Jim LaValle
Matt Anderson
Rick Montour
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
In the 2002 General Capital Improvement Budget, we estimated the cost of $9,000 to install a front-
end mounted bucket attachment on our existing Ford tractor. This attachment was warranted
because we lost our capability to load sand in our sanding trucks with our Bobcat due to its higher
use for blowing or sweeping snow from the Little Canada Road sidewalk and other trails in the City.
Upon contacting the dealer to install the front -end bucket attachment we were informed that they had
made an error and our tractor was not set up correctly for this attachment and it would cost over
$11,000 to install this attachment, alter the frame, add weights and new tires. Staff determined that
this was not cost effective and started investigated other alternatives.
While looking for alternatives to enable us to load sand into our trucks and continue to remove snow
from our streets, sidewalks, and trails, we learned that Ramsey County Public Works was selling a
tractor with a front -end bucket already installed on it that meet our needs. The 1990 Case 580K
Tractor has a claw type multi -front -end bucket, an enclosed cab, and a small rear -end mounted
bacichoe. We had a Case Tractor Dealer inspected the tractor and they determined it is in very good
shape and is valued to be between $20,000 and $24,000. We negotiated the County to $18,000 and
agreed to allow them to use the tractor when we were not using it. To stay within budget and keep
the number of pieces of equipment to a minimum, we are proposing to sell the existing Ford tractor,
which is valued between $9,000 and $11,000.
We recommend that the Little Canada City Council authorize staff to purchase the Case
tractor from Ramsey County for $18,000 and sell the existing Ford tractor.
H: \GregS \Correspondence \Greg S 2002 \Purchase of tractor.doc
