The State will allow us to simply bill the customers the prior amounts and not charge interest and
penalties. For commercial accounts with one water service charge, this amount would be $11.16, two
units would be $22.32. There are approximately 340 taxable commercial accounts with 280 (83 %)
being billed two or less water service charges. The largest of the remaining customers would be
Levitz, Slumberland, St. Jude, and Cub at 23 -27 units ($257), Market Place at 35 units ($391), local
bars and restaurants range from 6 to 16 units ($67 to $179), small business and office parks round out
the balance of the accounts greater than two units and this group ranges from 3 up to 16 units. The
group with two or less units would be back- billed $2,800 of the $10,000, or 28% of the amount due.
Therefore, the larger customers will pay 72% of the $10,000 or $7,200.
Staff is recommending that Council agree to the managed audit attached that will avoid interest and
penalties on approximately $10,000 at a minimum. Additionally staff recommends that the prior
sales tax amounts be billed to the commercial users as the gross amounts are not considered
burdensome to any in relationship to their current charges.
cc: Joel Hanson
Jessica Jagoe
2
