Glanzer, Kathy
From: Dan.Knudsen @lacek.com
ant: Wednesday, October 15, 2003 12:20 PM
o: kathy .glanzer @ci.little- canada.mn.us
Subject: Re: 10/8 Council Workshop
Kathy,
Would you forward the following note to the members of the council for
me?
Attention: Members of the City Council.
Re: 2:00 closing for Little Canada drinking establishments
Gentlemen,
I wanted to pass along my perspective on this matter as a long time
resident of Little Canada and a concerned citizen.
First, let me say, I don't think I've been awake at two, much less
closed a
bar in 10 years, for myself, we could close the local bars at midnight.
But I think it is really important that we don't view this issue with
our
first reactions as forty or fifty something people, as our first
reaction
would be to not favor moving the closing to 2 a.m. (as it was mine)
.ter considering the matter however, I am for the passing for two
important reasons.
1. Creating a level playing field for the businesses in our community.
I
believe that not passing this would create an unfair advantage to
establishments in neighboring cities like Maplewood who are competing
for
the same entertainment dollar. As a council, I think this is one of
your
most important charges In talking to Tom Duray, although there was no
solid data points available to help to quantify the impact, it seems
that
this would drive some patrons to select to visit a 2:00 establishment to
visit in the first place, for others it causes them at some point in the
evening to move to another bar for more drinking, apparently this begins
to
happen as early as 9 or 10. If the impact is 5% of revenue, it could
ultimately make the difference between making it and folding up.
2. Safety, having this patron "migration" during earlier hours vs having
them leave once, I believe is also important, Not to mention some of the
younger citizens of our community (who are inclined to stay up that
late)
have a shorter drive on the way home.
^tha11y, I think its important to not mix up the issue before us, I
ally
don't support the overall 2:00 bar closing anywhere, but given that that
horse has already left the barn, I think that passing the 2:00 for our
1
