10/19/03
To: The City of Little Canada Mayor, Council, and City Administrator
Fr: Don Bowman, Little Canada Resident at 2943 Payne Ave, N., Little Canada
Re: 2am Bar Closing
It has come to my attention that our city is considering a vote on 2am bar /restaurant closings, for
liquor/ food establishments, in the City of Little Canada. On behalf of myself, my wife (Karen)
and daughter Tracy, each of legal voting and drinking age, we are totally in favor of passage of
such legislation.
Our family has been residents of the City of Little Canada for over 18 years. It is our family's
contention that the potential amendment to allow 2am closings is a quality decision based on
several reasons:
Governments in surrounding communities have already passed such legislation. If citizens from
our community would like take advantage of such services, they should not have to drive to other
communities to use them. The people of Little Canada are smart enough to make the choice of
utilizing establishments in any hours they wish.
We should support city businesses not frustrate them. Several communities are having a hard
time finding business to use their business spaces the way it is, why would we want our local
community to support other community's establishments and not support ours. Turning
customers away could put our Local business people out business and that would be tragic.
People who work and go to school nights would be able to find places to eat and drink to suit
their needs with extended hours. Many people work and /or go to school until 11pm or later in the
evening. For them, the option to have restaurants open til 2am would be of great value to then.
Giving the business people the option to be open til 2am does not necessarily mean they will take
advantage of such legislation. However giving the business sector a chance to make their own
decisions, will only give them, the Little Canada business sector, a chance to do what they do
best, serve the citizens of Little Canada! I would be very sad if our community would be so
archaic and force these people out of business by not giving them this very common and basic
opportunity that so many communities in the state are already enjoying and benefiting from, as
we speak.
Respectfully,
-'
Don, Karen, and Tracy Bowman
2943 Payne Ave. N.
Little Canada MN 55117
651- 490 -0045
4
