Maryhouse Catholic Worker House of Hospitality 450 Little Canada Road, Little Canada Maryhouse is a home just east of the Church of Saint John's of Little Canada and has been a Catholic Worker House of Hospitality for more than fifty years. The eight women who lived there served the poor in the tradition of Dorothy Day (1897- 1980). The property was recently donated to the parish of Saint John's by two of the original members of that community. We, the people of St. John's are intending to remodel and update this home. The intent for this home is to continue in its original mission and will eventually be for women and children in need of temporary housing. Maryhouse is a Catholic Worker house of hospitality and will be lived in by one or more Catholic women who will serve as "house mothers." The home will also be staffed by several other Catholic women on a part -time basis, who will care for the guests by practicing the Works of Mercy and offering practical assistance to discover a wholesome way of life. Maryhouse will be open to women regardless of religion or marital status, and no financial compensation will be required. The number of bedrooms will be reduced from 8 bedrooms to 5 bedrooms. In the past Maryhouse had eight unrelated women living there and additional guests. Since it has been determined that the home could continue in its original mission without a special use permit, provided only interior remodeling takes place, per Steve Grittman city planner, we are asking for a conditional use permit for the reasons: 1) to make the structure safer (stairwell to second floor particularly) and 2) to add more appropriate common living space. We are proposing adding space between existing attached garage and existing house, plus adding 6' out from the front of the house, which will allow stairwell to be extended.
