Minnesota woman urges others to fly flag Page 2 of 2
International last week to start the campaign. She also took many calls
from reporters as news of the military mom's crusade spread nationally
on wire services.
Hutton said cities displaying flags include Mankato, North Mankato, Le
Sueur, St. Peter, Henderson, Arlington, Belle Plaine, New Prague,
Alden, Wells and Cresco, Iowa.
The Twin Cities, which has been home to antiwar rallies, may be more
difficult to convince, Hutton said. But she is confident that people
everywhere support the troops no matter how they feel about the war.
Hutton especially believes that people would fly the banner if they knew
how much it meant to military families. She herself is often overcome
when she sees a flag flying while out for a drive or a walk.
"It just touches everybody's heart," she said.
Hutton still recalls how many flags flew after the Sept. 11 attacks. She
said she is puzzled why some people haven't put their flags out yet.
If people see flags displayed in their cities, she hopes they will dig out
their own flags and fly them.
"This just may be something that, you know, needs a nudge," she said.
"That's all I'm doing. And it's not just for my son, it's for all of them."
Jill Burcum is atjburcun4 startribune.com.
Return totop
© Copyright 2003 Star Tribune. All rights reserved.
