9 | P a g e
Understanding Little Canada’s Local Economy
Little Canada’s industry mix has shifted over time. In 2002, industrial and production
employment represented nearly half of all primary jobs located in the city. By 2012, that share
had declined substantially, before rebounding modestly by 2023. Over the same period,
professional and knowledge-based employment increased as a share of total jobs, while
institutional and public sector employment remains comparatively limited.
Figure 4 – Employment in Little Canada by Industry, 2002-2023

Source – 2002, 2012, & 2023 LEHD Data
Compared to neighboring communities and the broader metropolitan area, Little Canada remains
more heavily weighted toward industrial and production activity. At 36.2 percent of total
employment, the city’s industrial share exceeds the metropolitan average of 25.1 percent and is
higher than most reference communities.
Figure 5 – Industrial and Production Employment as a Share of Total Jobs

Source – 2023 LEHD Data
In addition to industry composition, wage distribution provides insight into the quality of
employment located in the city. LEHD wage data categorizes earnings into three bands, with
$40,000 representing the highest reported tier.
