OPN ARCHITECTS +
CITY OF LITTLE CANADA 12
Relevant Project Experience
On the site of a former nine-hole golf course, the new community facilities at
Fred Richards Park in Edina are part of a comprehensive transformation of
43 acres into a natural environment designed to restore ecosystem services
within an urban setting; one that prioritizes inclusivity, accessibility, and
environmental sustainability.
Community amenities include the adaptive reuse of the former golf clubhouse
as a gathering and program space, alongside a new pavilion that anchors the
central green and great lawn. The pavilion provides food and beverage service
as well as year-round, universally accessible park restrooms. Designed as a
fully electric facility, the building incorporates a roof-mounted photovoltaic
array in alignment with the City of Edina’s sustainability policy and LEED Silver
performance goals.
Surrounding the pavilion are a high-performance natural materials playground,
pickleball and basketball courts, a new bike trailhead, picnic areas, and a multi-
use field.
Together, these elements position the pavilion as the central hub of the
park, an active convergence point for the pathways and spaces that support
recreation, wellness, and community connection.
Fred Richards Park Building
Location Edina, Minnesota
Year 2027 (estimated)
Delivery Construction Manager At Risk
Size 1,560 SF pavilion (new); 2,608 SF clubhouse (renovation)
Cost $3.6 million (combined)
Contact Rachel Finberg, Project Manager - City of Edina
rfinberg@edinamn.gov
(952) 826-0397
New building part of larger redevelopment balancing nature, community needs
NEW PARK FEATURES
NEW PARK BUILDING (KITCHEN/CONCESSIONS, MECHANICAL, RESTROOMS, PAVILION)
EVENT LAWN (HIGH QUALITY TURF)
FLEX LAWN (INFORMAL REC AND PLAY)
FLEX LINEAR PLAZA (VENDOR HOOK-UPS, DECORATIVE LIGHTING, SEATING)
SLEDDING HILL
PARKING WITH INTEGRATED BMP’S
PICKLEBALL (8 COURTS)
BASKETBALL
SHADE STRUCTURE WITH PICNIC SEATING
GATHERING OVERLOOK (SCULPTURAL SHADE STRUCTURES, MOVABLE TABLES)
MULTI GENERATIONAL CLIMBING FEATURE
INCLUSIVE NATURE PLAY AREA
• tower
• swings
• embankment play (slides, log steps)• balance features• water play
PERIMETER PLAYGROUND FENCING
EXISTING BUILDING RENOVATION TO INCLUDE STORAGE AND MAINTENANCE SPACE
FOOD FOREST
WETLAND BOARDWALK
DRINKING FOUNTAIN
WETLAND PRESERVE LOOP
INFORMAL NATURE PLAY TIMBER NODE
OUTDOOR CLASSROOM
EXISTING TO REMAIN
PLAYGROUND
PICNIC STRUCTURE
REGIONAL TRAIL
THREE RIVERS PARK DISTRICT REGIONAL TRAIL TRAILHEAD
BUILDING
1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8
9
A
B
C
D
WETLA
N
D
P
R
E
SE
R
V
E
10
11
12
13
14
E
15
1
2
3
5
4
6
7
16
8
9
9
10
12
13
14
15
16
17
17
17
11
ABC
D
E
PARK PLAN
50’100’200’300’N
18
19
18 KELLOGG AVEP
A
R
K
L
AW
N

A
V
E
SEDUM L
A
N
E
9
19
19
19
20
20
20
