MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
February 1, 2001
A resident asked when the City was planning to begin work on the park. Sanders stated that
work will begin this spring on the grading, seeding, and base for the trails and basketball
court. Seed will be used instead of sod due to the cost savings. He indicated that the play
area and gazebo will not be completed this year. Sanders commented that the trails will
eventually be asphalt.
A resident north of the park was concerned about drainage and how it would affect her yard.
Sanders stated that a catch basin in the northeast corner of the park will be tied into the storm
sewer to prevent any drainage problems.
Another resident was concerned about the number of trees proposed around the park
entrance. She was worried that too many trees could shelter the park presenting a dangerous
situation for younger children. Sanders stated that the plan is misleading...the trees are
actually 35 feet apart.
A resident asked if both pedestrians and bicyclists could use the trails. Sanders stated that
the proposed trails are 8 feet wide. They are intended for pedestrians, but could be used by
bicyclists. The trails are wide enough for bicyclists to pass pedestrians.
The residents in attendance were pleased with the proposed plan for their neighborhood park.
JACKSON ST. The residents in attendance were all in favor of the name "Rondeau Park" for their new
PARK NAME neighborhood park.
TRAIL
CONNECTION
TRAIL
SYSTEM
CONCERTS
Larson recommended the new park on Jackson Street, north of Little Canada Road be
named " Rondeau Park."
Motion seconded by Danielson.
Motion carried 7— 0.
Sackett Glaser stated that the City Council will have final say on the park name. The
Commission only makes recommendations to them. The residents asked the City to send
them notice of that Council meeting.
Sanders stated that a survey of the trail connection from Jackson Street to the Water Works
trail has been ordered. He will present the survey to the Commission when he receives it.
Sanders stated that staff has not made any contacts with property owners yet regarding
completion of the trail system. The grant application for these connections is not due until
May or June.
Gray recommended that this summer's concerts focus on kids, and that the number of
concerts held should be reduced from four to two. Larson stated that more advertisement is
needed to increase attendance at these events. Danielson suggested temporary signs on Little
Canada Road and publishing a notice in the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
Page 2
