LMC will be working with Avenet to
develop their newly launched "GovOffice.com" product to meet the specific needs of Minnesota
cities. This product provides a complete set of web solutions for cities. A web site can be built
and managed by a City without spending a lot of money, time maintaining it, or learning a new
programming Language. Attached is some more detailed information on the project.
The LMC has been soliciting cities to participate in the "Web for Cities" project as a beta city.
Beta cities will receive half off the cost to join. There is a one -time initial fee of $350 (versus
$700) not due until some time in May, and then the fee from there will be $20 /month (versus
$40). This fee includes hosting, maintenance, customer service calls, and future upgrades. This
arrangement would provide us the opportunity to check out the service without any financial
obligation. If we discover it isn't practical, we can discontinue with only staff time invested.
I checked with a couple of cities in our area that recently completed their web sites. Falcon
Heights spent $4,000 to design theirs. Their City Administrator, Heather Worthington, stated
she felt the League would be an excellent source for this service and wished it had been available
when they started their project.
Arden Hills just got their site up and running. A staff member put it together working through
the City of Roseville. They paid no out of pocket costs to Roseville for this service. However,
they have an arrangement for maintenance of their workstations at a cost of $600 per station per
year. (Roseville has made us the same offer, but we have only been spending $3,000 for this
work versus the $6,000 the arrangement would cost us.)
Page 36
