MAYOR
Michael 1. Fahey
COUNCIL
Beverly Scalze
Jim LaValle
Matt Anderson
Rick Montour
515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600 ADMINISTRATOR
(651) 766 -4029 / FAX: (651) 766 -4048 Joel R. Hanson
Email: cityhall @ci.little - canada.mn.us
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey and Members of the City Council
FROM: Joel Hanson, City Administrator
DATE: June 22, 2001
RE: Lake Gervais Weekend Water Patrol
Representatives of the Gervais Lake Association contacted me about the possibility of
having the Sheriff's Department provide water patrol services on Saturday and Sunday of
each summer weekend. They had asked about the possibility of two hours of service per
day to help address problems associated with increased lake usage.
I contacted Lt. Dale Sommerhaus of the Sheriff's Department. He informed me their
minimum contract time per day is four hours. Their charges are $35.00 per hour for
equipment and personnel. If we implemented this program on June 30th and continued
through the end of August, the cost would total $2,520.00.
Given that Lake Gervais also lies within the City of Maplewood, I contacted their City
Manager about his interest in participating in the cost of this patrol. I also suggested they
may want to consider the patrol to encompass Spoon and Keller Lakes as well. I have not
received a response from him.
Ms. Mugs Nardini and Mr. Mark Weavers will be present at Wednesday's meeting to talk
with the Council about this concept. While I think an argument can be made for the City
sharing in the cost of this public safety program, I don't believe we should bear the full
burden. The Council will need to make a policy decision as to the need for this service
and the allocation of costs.
cc: Mugs Nardini
Mark Weavers
Lt. Dale Sommerhaus
Page 166
