Little Canada Planning•COmi'nission FROM: Stephen Grittman DATE: October 9, 2000 ' RE: Little Canada — Residential Monument Signs FILE NO: 758.10 BACKGROUND The City has received previous requests for residential monument signage within • the public street or on outlots in or adjacent to the abbess streets for. residential projects. Previous discussion has focused on the ability to manage such signs wneri.tney are iboated on outlots within City streets. (3unJie Huvve ui Masterpiece Homes has approached•the City with a request that a sign be allowed within the right -of -way for Pitrina Park by a license. The Sign Ordinance currently prohibits signs on public right -of -way. The :attached amendment would permit the City Council to issue a license for such signs when it believes that they wilt not negatively affect the safety of street traffic in the area. ANALYSIS The. proposed amendment would provide•for both the platting and installation of residential monument signs on private property, as well as the installation of a monument.sign on the public right -a-way. The private property sign section (b.(1)) is designed to follow the previous discussion on such signs. The public right -of -way sign section (b.(2)) is new. . • The proposed amendment is designed to limit the number of. requests for such . signs by giving the City Council discretion to approvecertairi signs, depending on the location and design of the sign itself. As noted above, no signs are allowed in the public right -of -way under any condition.
