LITTLE CANADA
PARKS AND RECREATION
DEPARTMENT
515 Little Canada Road / Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
Telephone: (651) 484 -2177 / Fax: (651) 484 -4538
JIM MORELAN, Director
DON BOWMAN, Program Coordinator
DEREK ANDERSON, Program Coordinator
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey and Members of the City Council
FROM: Jim Morelan, Parks & Recreation Director
DATE: September 8, 2000
RE: Park Naming Process
At their meeting last evening, the Parks & Recreation Commission discussed procedures
for naming City parks. This discussion came about given that the City will begin
construction of new park facilities in the near future, specifically the parcel on the north
shore of Round Lake and the parcel north of Park View Court and east of Jackson Street.
I have already received some input from residents of these areas regarding the naming of
these parks.
The Park & Recreation Commission would like to take on the task of soliciting public
input into the naming of these parks. Based on the input received, the Commission
would make a recommendation for the name of each park to the City Council for final
approval. The procedure the Commission is proposing is outlined in the attached excerpt
from their September 7th meeting minutes. I feel the Commission's proposal does a good
job of soliciting public input and is very similar to the method that the City used to name
Pioneer Park approximately 10 years ago.
With Council approval of this process, the Commission would like to start immediately.
The first step will be to include an article in the next issue of the newsletter which will be
distributed approximately December 1n.
I recommend approval of adoption of the park naming process as outlined by the Parks &
Recreation Commission.
Page 56
