LITTLE CANADA
PARKS AND RECREATION
DEPARTMENT
515 Little Canada Road / Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
Telephone: (651) 484 -2177 / Fax: (651) 484 -4538
JIM MORELAN, Director
DON BOWMAN, Program Coordinator
DEREK ANDERSON, Program Coordinator
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey and Members of the City Council
FROM: Jim Morelan, Parks & Recreation Director
DATE: August 22, 2000
RE: 2001 Fastpitch Season
Over the past two seasons, the Parks & Recreation Department has been exploring
different options to the current youth fastpitch softball program. As you know, I have
expressed preference to coordinate this sport through an association rather than the Parks
& Recreation Department.
We have had numerous discussions and meetings with the Roseville Girls' Fastpitch
Association (RGFA) in regard to how we could better serve and place more girls into this
sport in the north suburban area. The result of these talks is a pending agreement to
combine the two fastpitch programs under one association beginning next season.
A meeting was held earlier this month with our Little Canada coaches from this past
season to get their input. Having a
greater overall number of players in a program will result in more players being able to
participate in the sport and fewer players having to be cut. The combining of girls from
these two programs should also be fairly well accepted given the social interaction of
players as most of them will and do attend junior and senior high together.
Several details will have to be worked out as time goes on. One of those involves the
future name of the organization. I feel very strongly about community identity as do the
present RGFA board members who are not only from Roseville, but also Falcon Heights,
Shoreview, Arden Hills, and Maplewood. I have received assurance from the present
RGFA Board that the organization will be renamed if we choose to participate with them.
I expect a more "generic" name to be chosen that will not tend to favor any of the
communities that make up the association. Another assurance I have received is that all
of the girls who played through the Little Canada program, regardless of city of
Page 12
