MAYOR
Michael I. Fahey
COUNCIL
Beverly Scalze
Jim LaValle
Steve Morelan
Bob Pedersen
515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600 ADMINISTRATOR
(651) 484 -2177 / FAX: (651) 484 -4538 Joel R. Hanson
Email: cityhall @ci.little - canada.mn.us
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey and Members of the City Council
FROM: Greg Schroeder, Public Works Director
DATE: May 4, 2000
RE: Lighting of Little Canada Road Update
Based on Council direction at the April 26, 2000 meeting, we had NSP develop two
illumination capability patterns for the portion of Little Canada Road between Market
Place Drive and County Road C for a single 150 watt bulb hexagonal lantern style
streetlight. One illumination capability pattern is for light space 75' apart along the north
side of the street (See Figure A). The second illumination capability pattern is for streets
staggered along both sides of the street (See Figure B). The solid line on figures A and B
represent where %z candle of light will be (where it starts to get dark). Based on these
illumination capability patterns it was concluded that the sidewalk and about 75% of the
new street will be best illuminated by having the street light along the north side of the
street.
NSP estimates the cost to install 60 single head streetlights at $246,098. This estimate
also includes the cost to install a conduit along the south side of Little Canada Road from
the RR tracks to County Road C. This would enable easier and less disruptive
installation of streetlights in the future.
Based on the above, it is recommend that the council direct staff to proceed with the
design and installation of 60 —150 watt, single head, hexagonal lantern style street
lights that are located only on the north side of Little Canada Road between Market
Place Drive and County Road C.
Also, at the April 26, 2000, meeting, the City Council did not have much time to fully
review, discuss, and determine if they wanted banner arms or electrical outlets installed
on some of the street lights. Banner arms cost about $90 each and electrical outlets will
cost about $250 each (includes wiring). Council direction on these items is requested so
we can finalize arrangements with NSP.
\ \CLCSRVOI \HOMEVessicai \Greg \Li ghtini
Page 96
