March 21, 2000
To Little Canada City Council
From: Larry and Liz Jones
115 Old County Road C
RE: Jackson Street Stop Sign
RE: Commercial Business on Jackson Street
Regarding the article in last weeks' Roseville Review and removal of the Jackson Street Stop Sign.
Our family opposes the removal of the stop sign for the following reasons.
1) The Park
The stop sign is a crossing point from the walking path to Nadeau Park. We have been teaching
our children to wait at the sign, and we cross safely together. We can visit the park with anywhere
from three to eight small children, stragglers included.
2) Disregard at stop sign
Because we visit the park often, we note that the traffic moving along the stretch often disregards
the stop sign. It is not the uncommon to see drivers speed through the sign defiantly, or "tap'
brakes as they roll through as well as yell and display obscenities. Other drivers are impatient
at the stop, braking hard and moving through quickly.
3) Speed of traffic
The walking path has brought a lot of pedestrian traffic through this neighborhood. Yet 10' away we
have a road that serves as a shortcut for the many residents of Demont Street. Drivers are intent
on getting out of the area to jobs in the morning, and intent on getting home in the evenings. We
live on the Old County Road Cstretch of this shortcut, and in the last few years traffic has increased
and drivers more aggressive. We have had drivers angrily pass us as we turn into our driveway, honk
and even shake their fists at us.
There is an increasing lack of regard for Jackson, Old County Road C, and Lakeshore as residential
streets. Removing the stop sign will increase the speed and facilitate the "racetrack" feel of this stretch
of road.
Regarding 2622 Jackson, the Bixby Residence.
We are opposed to the operation of a business, at this residence because of the five service
vehicles parked outside. This residence is located on the corner of Jackson and Rose, and brings
more traffic in and out of the area, due to workers needing to drive in, park their cars and transfer to
a service vehicle before leaving again. Also, the excessive number of service vehicles add to the
"commercial feel" of this stretch of road. This duster of vehicles is a lack of regard for creating a
neighborhood ambiance that we need to hang onto. Additionally, this residence is also a duplex which
also creates more people and cars concentrated in a small area. There is also a school bus stop
on Jackson and Rose which is another level of congestion for this small area.
The Bixby's need to reposition their satellite installation business into an appropriate commercial
location. Allowing them one year to do so is excessive.
