Hanson
www.ci.little-canada.mn.us
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Blesener & Members of City Council
FROM: Bill Dircks, Public Works Superintendent
DATE: July 6, 2012
RE: 2012 Seal Coating
Quotes for the 2012 seal coating project are due on Tuesday, July 10. Staff expects to get
two quotes, one from Allied Blacktop and one from Pearson Brothers. Staff will have a
recommendation for award at the meeting on Wednesday.
Last year it was decided to forego seal coating after receiving only one quote. Staff
decided to revamp the seal coating schedule to better match the performance of the new
asphalt being used on streets. It is holding up much better than older mixes used to.
County Road 132 was reconstructed in 2005 and is still in excellent condition. There are
very few cracks in the street. There is some oxidation occurring so it is probably a good
time to seal coat the street. Ryan Drive is holding up well since the wood pilings were
removed and it was paved in 2002. Staff wanted to make sure it held up before spending
additional dollars on it. The small piece of Allen Avenue east of Greenbrier has not been
seal coated since it was built in 2003 so staff thought this was a good year to fit it in now
that all of the mill and overlay and reconstruction work is complete in that neighborhood.
The other streets have reached the point of needing another seal coat to get them to the
end of their useful lives.
The quote that was received was for $1.25 per square yard. Staff expects a similar price
this year. A list of streets has been included for your review. You will see that County
Road 132 east of Rice Street is on the schedule and makes up most of the project.
1
