515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
(651) 484 -2177 / FAX: (651) 484 -4538
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey and Members of the City Council
FROM: Joel R. Hanson, City Administrator
DATE: April 27, 1999
RE: Sump Pump Inspection Program
MAYOR
Michael I. Fahey
COUNCIL
Beverly Scalze
Jim LaValle
Steve Morelan
Bob Pedersen
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
We recently had a data practices request for information relative to our sump pump
inspection program. In assembling the information pursuant to this request, I came
across a requirement in State Statutes, which indicates that a public hearing would have
to be held to enable this program. (See MN Statutes Section 471.342, Subdivision 4)
Therefore, to bring our program into compliance, it is my recommendation we hold a
hearing on May 25th to consider readoption of our program guidelines as have been
previously discussed.
As an aside, there was substantial public discussion on this program. Two neighborhood
meetings were held where attendance was minimal if not non - existent. This action is
needed to keep us in compliance with State Statute as it is likely we may have to get
administrative warrants to inspect a handful of properties who have denied us access.
As another point of interest, I want to inform you that Bill Dircks, our sump h pump
inspector, has resigned to take a full -time job. His last day will be May l4`1,. Bill has
done a very good job for us and we wish him the best in his new endeavor. We will be
attempting to fill the position as soon as possible. We think the program should be
wrapped up early this fall.
Page 15
