Got used outdoor gear? Woods -N -Water will buy and sell it
By Ron C. Hustvedt, Jr.
In the hunting, fishing and
camping market, manufacturers
battle each other to have the latest
and greatest products for the con-
sumer. Keeping up with the
trends is an expensive proposi-
tion.
In the spirit of competition,
retail stores keep the latest and
greatest products in stock. As a
• result, lots of equipment never
sees the store floor because of
market shifts or a retailer loses
interest in the product.
So what happens to all that
stuff?
Some of it is bound for a new
store called Woods -N -Water Once
Again located at 7990 University
Ave. NE, in Fridley.
"Our advertising slogan is 'Why
buy new when 'gently used' will
do,— said Woods -N -Water CEO
Richard Enrico. "A lot of the prod-
ucts we'll have here will be close
outs, refurbished items, returns,
salesmen samples, and over-
stocks."
In addition to new equipment
Enrico said the store specializes in
previously owned hunting, fish-
ing, and camping equipment.
"There are basements, cabins, •
and garages hill of good stuff that
we'd like to see back in circula-
tion," Enrico said. "People can
bring in their gently used equip-
ment and either sell it to us for
cash or trade it for something
else," Enrico said.
As the president and founder of
Second Wind Exercise Equipment.
Enrico is not new to the value -
added world of business. And he
thinks the exercise market is small .
compared to the outdoor market.
Eventually, Enrico hopes to have
eight Woods -N -Water stores in
the metro area.
General Manager Jim Markham
is very excited about the store's
CEO Richard Enrico says the slogan of Woods -N -Water is "Why
buy new when 'gently used' will do ?"
concept.
"We're trying to make it so that
the person who's making $30,000
a year with a few kids and wants
to go fishing can pick up some
nice equipment for a good price
rather than buying some cheap
stuff elsewhere," Markham said.
There is a catch to the concept,
however. Markham and Enrico
admit that they won't have every
outdoorsman's needs at all times.
Markham encourages people to
periodically visit the store to see
what equipment is on hand.
"We might not have the gloves
that we have right now next
month, but instead we might have
ammunition for a great price," he
said, "The guy who walks in here
with a list in his hand might not
be able to fill it like he would in a
retail store, but he'll be able to get
most of it for a great price."
While he admits he won't
always have everything that retail
stores stock, Markham said he
always has a good supply of
essentials like rods, reels, hunting
boots, and clothing.
Used equipment such as rods,
reels, clothing, guns, electronics
will also be in stock —as it comes
in from the public.
"We want to encourage people
to bring their stuff in so they can
either trade it in or get cash for it,"
Markham said.
Enrico said the turnaround on
used equipment depends on its
condition but stressed that the
resale price would not be much
larger than the store's purchase
price.
"We're trying to get as much
used stuff as possible," Markham
said. "We'll take it and sell it as-
15," he said holding up a tacklebox
filled with lures. "We may sell this
whole box for 320 when it's obvi-
ous there's at least $10 worth of
tackle inside."
People who want to trade or sell
items should call or stop in for
pricing on equipment.
Just because the business is
stocked with used or surplus
items does not mean the store is
stocked with rejected items,
Markham said. Rather, they are
items either people or the industry
has outgrown but remain in excel -
lent shape.
"Often times a retail buyer will
overpurchase, and they'll have a
surplus and have to sell it off or
the public's demand changes, and
they end up with too much stuff,"
Markham said. "Right now we
have a lot of hunting clothes
because of the warmer tempera-
tures last fall reduced the
demand."
While Markham said he won't
buy a 16 -foot boat with a 175 -hp
motor, items such as a 9.9 motor
or a 12 -foot boat are appropriate.
Some example of of the deals on
hand at Woods -N -Water Once
Again include: a new lined, water-
proof, camouflage hunting jacket,
which retails for $192 going for
$70; quality, water -proof
Thinsulate gloves for $10; Lindy
Shadlings which retail for $10
going for $3.99; and, Berkeley,
bionic IM6 graphite flipping rods,
which retail for around $80 going
for half the cost.
"What we have now we might
never have again or we might
have it again next week. It's all
based on the market. You can be
sure we'll always have good prod-
ucts at excellent prices, Markham
said.
