515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117-1600
(651) 484 -2177 / FAX: (651) 484 -4538
AGENDA ITEM
TO: Mayor Fahey and Members of the City Council
FROM: Joel Hanson, City Administrator
Greg Schroeder, Public Works Director
DATE: October 7, 1998
RE: Vacuum/Sewer Cleaner Truck
MAYOR
Michael 1. Fahey
COUNCIL
Beverly Scalze
Jim LaValle
Steve Morelan
Bob Pedersen
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
As you may know our existing 1972 jetter truck is nearing the end of its useful life and is
scheduled to be replaced in 1998 with a combination jetter /vacuum truck. Our jetter truck is
used to keep our City sewer lines clean, thus:
1. Reducing the potential for sewage back -up into our residents' basements, wetlands,
streams and lakes.
2. Minimizing odor complaints.
3. Minimizing lift station failures.
4. Maintaining intended flow in our system.
Since our 1972 jetter truck was built, the sewer cleaning industry has expanded its equipment
line. Trucks available today not only can clean sewer lines, but also contain vacuum systems
that will remove the jetted material from the bottom of the manholes without sending a person
down into the manhole. This not only eliminates a confined space safety issue, but also increases
the efficiency of removing the material at the bottom of the manhole. Besides removing material
for the bottom of the manhole, the vacuum system can also be used for:
• Cleaning ditches. (future maintenance along County Road B2)
• Cleaning gate valves.
• Storm sewer catch basin dewatering and cleaning.
• Keep excavation hole dry during water main repairs.
• Emergency lift station pumping during power outages.
Page 44
