515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
(612) 484 -2177 / FAX: (612) 484 -4538
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey and Members of the City Council
FROM: Scott R. Tangen, Public Works Director
DATE: March 20, 1998
RE: Street Sweeping Bids
MAYOR
Michael I. Fahey
COUNCIL.
Beverly Scalze
Jim LaValle
Steve Morelan
Bob Pedersen
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
The City received four bids for 1998 street sweeping. One bid packet was returned to the
vendor unopened given that it was submitted after the deadline.
Bids were received from the following:
McPhillips Sweeping
George's Sweeping
Allied Blacktop
$63.00/Hour
$65 .00/Hour
$69.50/Hour
While McPhillips Sweeping appears to be the low bidder, I am recommending that 1998
street sweeping be awarded to George's Sweeping. The equipment used by this firm is
faster than McPhillips; therefore, I anticipate George's will get the work done in less
time. George's Sweeping does not require that a City vehicle follow the sweeper to haul
away sweepings. This will free up a City employee and a vehicle for the week it takes to
sweep the City. There will be three designated dump sites in the City that George's will
utilize. The dumpings at these sites will be disposed of by Public Works after sweeping
is complete. McPhillips' requires a City vehicle follow each sweeper working in the
City.
George's Sweeping anticipates a start date of March 30 °i. McPhillips could not begin
sweeping the City until some time in May.
Page 42
