Wye Wanah
MAYOR
B111 Blesener
COUNCIL
Rick Montour
John Keis
Michael McGraw
Shelly Boss
515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600 ADMINISTRATOR
(651) 766 -4029 / FAX: (651) 766 -4048 Joel R. Hanson
www. ci.little- canada. mn. us
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Blesener & Members of City Council
FROM: Bill Dircks, Public Works Superintendent
DATE: September 19, 2012
RE: Pavement Markings
County Road B2 was seal coated this summer from Rice Street to Canabury Drive.
County Road B2 has a center left turn lane that had twenty sets of left turn arrows
running along the entire stretch of road as well as railroad crossing warnings on either
side of the railroad tracks. The City needs to have these markings painted now that the
seal coat has covered the originals up. Rather than replace all forty left turn arrows, staff
is proposing to replace only twenty of them. It should still be very clear to drivers that
the center lane is for left turns.
Along with the markings on B2 staff also needs to add some crosswalk markings at
intersections that need them and replace four existing crosswalks that have either been
covered up by seal coating or have worn out. We had most of our crosswalks painted
with epoxy paint back in 2007 and most of them are still in very good shape. The
decision to use epoxy paint appears to have been a good one.
Staff solicited quotes from two vendors both experienced in epoxy coatings for the
pavement marking project.
Century Fence: $15,175
AAA Striping: $13,220
Based on the quotes received staff recommends accepting the quote from AAA Striping
for $13,220 for the 2012 pavement marking project. The unusually high cost for the
markings was anticipated and accounted for in the 2012 Streets Budget.
1
