Staff Report <br />To:Mayor Fischer and Members of the City Council <br />From:Bryce Shearen, City Administrator <br />Date: May 20, 2026 <br />Re:City Council Vacancy Finalist Interviews <br />Action To Be Considered: <br />Discuss and review candidate applications to fill the open Council seat. <br />Background: <br />Following the resignation of Councilmember Gutierrez, the City initiated a process to fill the vacant <br />City Council seat for the remainder of the term ending December 31, 2026. <br />The city accepted and received eleven applications from interested residents and received a strong pool <br />of applicants representing a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and community perspectives. <br />Councilmembers independently reviewed and evaluated the applications, which were used to provide <br />the framework to assist with discussion. <br />At the Council review meeting, the Council discussed the applicants and used a structured process to <br />identify finalists for interviews. <br />Discussion: <br />The purpose of this workshop is for the City Council to conduct finalist interviews as part of the <br />appointment process for the vacant City Council position. <br />Each finalist will participate in an interview with the City Council utilizing a consistent set of <br />interview questions. The interview process is intended to provide the Council with additional <br />information regarding each candidate’s qualifications, communication style, collaboration approach, <br />and overall fit for the role. <br />Following completion of the interviews, the Council may discuss the candidates and determine next <br />steps regarding the appointment process. <br />Recommendation: <br />No formal action is required at this time unless directed by the Council. The workshop is intended to <br />facilitate finalist interviews and discussions related to the City Council vacancy appointment process.
