Alligator cracking <br />Interconnected cracks forming small pieces ranging in size from one inch to approximately six inches. <br />This is caused by failure of the surfacing due to traffic loading (fatigue) and very often also due to inade- <br />quate base or subgrade support. Repair by excavating localized areas and replacing base and surface. <br />Large areas require reconstruction. Improvements in drainage may often be required. <br />Typical alligator <br />crack pattern <br />On half the pavement, <br />cracks are tight, no <br />spalling or potholes <br />Characteristic <br />"chicken wire" <br />crack pattern <br />Shows smaller <br />pavement pieces <br />and patching <br />Page 46 <br />Open ravelled <br />alligator cracks <br />Cracking and settle- <br />ment along lane edge <br />probably due to very <br />soft subgrade <br />
