Alligator cracking
Interconnected cracks forming small pieces ranging in size from one inch to approximately six inches.
This is caused by failure of the surfacing due to traffic loading (fatigue) and very often also due to inade-
quate base or subgrade support. Repair by excavating localized areas and replacing base and surface.
Large areas require reconstruction. Improvements in drainage may often be required.
Typical alligator
crack pattern
On half the pavement,
cracks are tight, no
spalling or potholes
Characteristic
"chicken wire"
crack pattern
Shows smaller
pavement pieces
and patching
Page 46
Open ravelled
alligator cracks
Cracking and settle-
ment along lane edge
probably due to very
soft subgrade
