Page - 4 | METROPOLITAN COUNCIL
12. If your proposed program includes grant activities at municipal properties, please walk
through your plans for device replacements and/or turfgrass conversion. In the case of
turfgrass conversion, please describe where the work will occur, area removed, species
removed, area replaced, species replaced, watering and maintenance needs, and
estimated annual gallons of water saved (with explanation of estimate).
At this time, the City’s proposed turfgrass conversion project is in the early planning and
design phase. A preliminary site has been identified at City Hall, where turfgrass areas will be
evaluated for conversion to more water-efficient landscaping. The project is currently being
designed in coordination with Brian Olson of Ramsey County. Design development is ongoing
and will include detailed specifications such as the exact project area, square footage of
turfgrass to be removed, existing turf species, and the native or low-water-use species to be
installed as replacements. Additionally, the final design will outline long-term watering
requirements and maintenance practices to ensure sustainability and reduced water demand.
While these details are not yet finalized, the City anticipates that the conversion will
significantly reduce irrigation needs compared to traditional turfgrass. Estimated annual water
savings (in gallons) have not yet been calculated; however, this analysis will be completed as
part of the design process once planting plans, irrigation strategies, and site-specific
conditions are finalized. The City is committed to implementing a high-impact, water-efficient
project and will incorporate quantifiable water savings and detailed specifications as they
become available in later stages of project development.
