LITTLE CANADA
PARKS AND RECREATION
DEPARTMENT
515 Little Canada Road / Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
Telephone: (612) 484 -2177 / Fax: 484-4538
JIM MORELAN, Director
DON BOWMAN, Program Coordinator
MICHELLE DeBACE, Program Coordinator
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey & Members of the City Council
FROM: Jim Morelan, Director of Parks & Recreation
DATE: April 30, 1997
Several weeks ago, the Children's Discovery Branch in Vadnais Heights was forced to
temporarily evacuate their building due to a small fire. Fortunately, the problem was minor and
the children were permitted to return within a short period. They have an adjacent business in
Vadnais Heights that allowed Children's Discovery to bring their children inside during that
incident.
Today I received a call from Tom Krejci, owner of Children's Discovery. He requested the use
of the Old Fire Hall should a similar situation occur at their Little Canada building. This would
only be used as an emergency back -up location for one or two hours if a situation should arise
during their regular business hours, causing an evacuation of their building. Busses or parent
transportation would then be provided to escort the children home if they could not return to
Children's Discovery.
I feel that this would not interfere with my current scheduling of the building to any degree
(much less than the use of the building as a shelter from tornadoes, as it is used now).
On behalf of the City, I have informed Mr. Krejci that we would make the building available to
him should such an emergency arise. The Fire Department would likely be on the scene to
access the building, or if necessary, the City Hall would probably be open to provide a key.
It is further understood that should the City determine at a future date that this agreement is not
feasible or in conflict with the City's scheduling of the building for its own use, it may be
necessary to re- discuss or rescind the arrangement.
c.c.
