515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
(612) 484 -2177 / FAX: (612) 484 -4538
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey & Members of the City Council
FROM: Joel R. Hanson, City Administrator
DATE: June 20, 1997
RE: Goose Control Round up
MAYOR
Michael I. Fahey
COUNCIL
Beverly Scalze
Jim LaValle
Steve Moreton
Bob Pedersen
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R Hanson
I recently received a few calls from residents on Savage Lake concerned about the proliferation
of the goose population and the associated nuisances. I have received calls in the past from
representatives of St. Jude Medical, Grand Pre, and Canabury Pond Condominiums on this same
topic. We have also experienced problems in some of our parks.
I have talked with Mr. Jim Cooper of the Department of Natural Resources who is an expert in
this area. He is very familiar with our situation, as he has heard from several of' these same
property owners. He estimates that about 50 birds are impacting our area. His recommendation
was that we do a round up of all the birds. (This needs to occur between now and the 3`d week of
July. This is the molting period during which geese are unable to fly.) He further recommends
that we do the same thing in 1998. Based on these two events, he estimates we will reduce the
population by 70% of current levels. He will then proceed to check with us on an annual basis if
we want to continue our participation. He pointed out that neighboring jurisdictions have been
participating in this event to control the populations. As a result, he feels our efforts will be
successful. He estimates the cost of this program to be $600 to $700 depending on the processing
of the adult birds. (The adult birds are processed and turned over to area food shelves.) My
guess is the cost could easily approach $1,000.
It would be my recommendation that we authorize the goose control round up within the City
and participate in the cost with other interested parties. I would suggest we authorize an
expenditure of City funds up to $500 per year for the next two years for this purpose. I will
solicit the participation of other parties (see attached letter).
JRH:kpv
Enclosure
Page 99
