Come on, there's room for everyone! <br />What good can actions from individuals really do? Think about it for a moment. Almost every major <br />social movement has begun with individual actions. Building young people's foundations is no different. <br />The experiences of our youth will not see a positive change unless individuals — parents, youth, <br />neighbors, friends, grandparents, and others -- take personal responsibility for contributing to their <br />healthy development. <br />Getting involved is easier than it may sound. Search Institute has compiled some lists that can give you <br />ideas about how you can be a positive influence in a child's life. But remember — don't let these lists <br />limit you! Use them as a springboard for coming up with some of your own ideas. <br />Five Things Adults Can Do to Build Assets <br />Five Things Young People Can Do to Build Assets <br />150 Ways to Show Kids You Care <br />Sure, all this sounds great, but after a long day, who has the time or the energy to brainstorm ways to be <br />a positive intluence in a young person's life? That's why were here! Read this handful of ideas that you <br />can use to explore and find your place in Healthy Communities - Healthy Youth! <br />Five Things Adults Can Do to Build Assets <br />1. Look at and greet every child or adolescent you see. <br />2. Have a five- minute conversation with a child or adolescent about her or his interests. <br />3. Send a "thinking of you" or birthday card, letter, or email message to a child or adolescent. <br />4. Invite a young person to do something you enjoy doing together (play a game, go to a park, go to <br />a movie, etc.) <br />5. Have an open -door policy in your neighborhood so kids feel welcome in your home for <br />refreshments, conversation, or just hanging out. <br />Hmm...So where exactly do young people fit into HC -HY? You're the ones that actually KNOW the <br />challenges were tallcing about! You probably see them every day with your friends, in your classrooms <br />and at work.
