MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
NOVEMBER 6, 1997
it any maintenance. He mentioned that the Lion's Club had donated it. He stated that the
residents did not use it and maybe there could be something else done to maintain it.
Johnson made the statement that it appears there is not so much the need for an additional
court as it would be to have a court that is maintained.
Remerowski wanted to know what it would take for a city crew to maintain the court. The
Director stated that the city probably could, but would have to discuss it with Scott Tangen.
The Director asked if one court would be sufficient at this time. The spokesperson said they
would be satisfied with one court.
Bianchi mentioned that there was some discussion about a court that was never used. The
Director stated that several years ago Spooner Park had a double court, built by the
Minnesota Bocce Ball Association and that it hardly ever got used so it was eliminated and
replaced with a parking lot. The Director thought that people were probably more interested
in Bocce Ball now.
Remerowski stated that the Lion's Club could be approached to see if they could give money
toward a court. Johnson thought it would be a good idea to go back to the Lion's Club, but
in the meantime would like Jim to go back to the City and see if they could maintain the
court on a regular basis. It was suggested that the Bocce Ball players group contact the
Lion's club to see if they would be interested in maintaining the court on a regular basis. If
they were not interested, the Director would discuss it with the City Public Works
maintenance people.
Johnson wanted to know who the contact person would be and it was established that Cleone
LaValle would be the one to contact. Johnson stated that there would be an update for them
later.
TAX Johnson stated that the Commission needs to review Tax Forfeited Properties to see if there
FORFEITED would be any interest in adding the property to the parkland. Johnson stated that Bill Sanders
PROPERTIES usually has insight on this subject and wondered if the Director had talked to him. The
Director said that he and Bill had discussed both parcels and that the one on the corner of
Demont and Ruth is just a low area next to a residential lot. He did not think that it would
tie to anything in the City's long range park plan. Johnson said there was plenty of open
space nearby. The Director agreed, stating that they had school property and the skating rink
nearby. Anderson wanted to know if this was close to the railroad tracks. The Director said
it was west of there about two blocks. Johnson stated that she did not see any park purpose
for that piece of property. Remerowski felt it was fine to let it go back, in his opinion.
The Director stated that eventually what might happen would be that one of the neighboring
property owners might pick it up to have extra yard and hopefully get it back on the tax rolls.
Remerowski wanted to know if the city could notify these property owners that there would
Page 179
