Twenty-six
communities responded to the survey, and I have attached a summary of the responses to the
survey to this memorandum.
The purpose of this memorandum is to provide observations and some noteworthy facts learned
from this survey.
The first thing I noticed upon receiving the initial response on the survey is that I failed to
provide a question in the survey to indicate who sent the survey or the population of the
community. A number of the responders obviously noted that shortcoming and either attached
a card or wrote in the name of the community and return address.
Of the 26 communities responding to the survey, well over half hire a dozen or more seasonal
employees. Nine of the 26 hired over 20 and three of the communities surveyed hired 50
seasonal employees. .
Six of the 26 communities had two pay scales for seasonal staff. Those with two pay scales
either had higher pay scales for individuals who are willing to work a full season (six months)
or who brought special skills to the position.
The majority of the communities surveyed started first year employees between 55.50 /hour and
57.00 /hour. By the second year the average wage was between $6.25 and 57.50 and by the
third year between 56.50 and 3.800 /hour. Burnsville is the only community that provided an
incentive program and a copy of that program is attached.
Seven communities had a minimum age of 16. Two communities had a minimum age of 17.
All of the remaining communities had a minimum age of 18. Five communities required a
driver's license and seven requested prior work experience preferably with lawn maintenance.
a ec.c:za we'
Page 68
