Hanson Chief Deputy John Luey and Lieutenant Mike Shanley will be present at Wednesday's meeting to provide you with an update on law enforcement activities in Little Canada as experienced by the Ramsey County Sheriff's Department. Based upon a meeting we had with Sheriff's Department officials on July 9, 1996, I was also anticipating that they would be suggesting some ordinance changes for your consideration. The changes as I understood them were as follows: * Some type of overnight parking limitation. (No parking from 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.) This ordinance helps with snowplowing and better identification of activity within the community because vehicles will typically not be on the street. * Authority to tag unlicensed vehicles on private property. This allows the Sheriff's Department to keep a better handle on cars within certain parking lots where more activity seems to occur. (Concern with this ordinance is that people gone for winter months may have their vehicles tagged when they are not in the position to correct the problem.) An ordinance authorizing the use of State laws and ordinances in mobile home parks to give the Sheriff's Department more authority in this area. Since that meeting, I was expecting the Sheriff's Department to put their recommendations in writing for consideration by the Council. After further review, it may be that the Sheriff's Department has concluded the changes are not necessary. I will attempt to clarify this matter prior to Wednesday's meeting in order that we can have whatever discussions are necessary on this topic. Page 1 a
