UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA Minnesota Geologicel Survey
TWIN CITIES 1633 Eustis Street
St. Paul. Minnesota 55108
(612) 373 -3372
July 23, 1976
Mr. Roger Runyon
3046 LaBore Road
Little Canada, MN 55109
Dear Mr. Runyon,
As we discussed in our telephone conversation this morning, I am
sending you a map which indicates the first geological formations
that occur below the soil zone in the area around your home. I have
colored yellow, the Hugo Sand Formation which underlies your home and
the proposed housing development. The red dots indicate water -wells
which draw water from a common sand and gravel body. The other homes
shown on the map may have wells which obtain water from the sand and
gravel unit below the Hugo Sand, but we have no record of these wells.
I am enclosing the records of several water -wells shown on the .map.
Although these wells vary in depth, they end at approximately the
same elevation above sea level in the same sand and gravel formation.
Whether groundwater withdrawn from the proposed housing development
will affect future yields from this common water bearing formation
(i.e. aquifer) is difficult to determine without extensive study.
However, it appears that many homes already use this aquifer with
little effect upon it. It is highly probable that if the sixty homes
in the proposed housing development were to each have a well drilled
into the aquifer used by you and your neighbors, very little effect
would be noted in the groundwater supply available for your wells.
Possibly, pumping from the sixty wells concentrated in such a devel-
opment may cause a localized lowering of water levels in surrounding;
welis, but lowering the "pumps,1n these> wells wili salve this problem
In summary, although I cannot give you a definite statement
regarding the influence the proposed housing development will have
on water yields from the existing wells in your area, it appears
such an effect would be minimal. If you have any further questions,
please feel free to contact me.
Enclosures
B0 /rmm
0013
Sincerely,
Bruce Olsen
Geologist
