Chlebeck, Clerk
City of Little Canada
515 Little Canada Road
Little Canada, Minnesota 55117
Dear Mr. Chlebeck:
291 -6359
zc aul, Minnesota 55101 Area Ei ''_. 44-Exkliat
June 1, 1976
The Metropolitan Council is the liaison between the Census Bureau and the
Minneapolis-St. Paul SMSA. One of our responsibilities is to appoint and
chair a census tract committee for this area. In preparing for the 1980 census
rather than have the usual census tract committee of businessmen and personnel
from other agencies, we are asking the communities to assist in this task. We
are asking for your assistance with Little Canada.
Census tracts are small, permanently established, geographic areas into which
large cities and their environs have been divided for statistical purposes. The
Census Bureau publishes population, income, housing, and various other types
of data for each of these tracts following each federal census. The original
boundaries usually remain the same so that statistical comparisons can be
made over a period of time. Tracts can be divided into two or more new census
tracts if population growth warrants a division. The Census Bureau wants tracts
to average about 4,000 persons. They are usually laid out attempting to achieve
some uniformity of population characteristics, economic conditions, and living
conditions.
At present Little Canada has one census tract. By 1980, it will have the population
for two tracts; therefore, you may wish to subdivide the tract along lines that would
enable you to receive data for a smaller geographic area for future grant appli-
cations, planning, etc.
Would you please check your present city boundary on the enclosed maps and make
any corrections. Any census tract subdivisions should also be indicated on the maps
in colored pencil. These census tract boundaries have to follow streets, highways,
:.',n_g anti Uecelop:v Brit of the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area Comprising:
r3e:r..
