STATE OF
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL. RESOURCES
CENTENNIAL OFFICE BUILDING • ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA • 55155
DNR INFORMATION
November 27, 1979 (612) 296 -6157
Little Canada Village Offices
515 East Little Canada Rd.
Little Canada, Minn. 55117
Dear City Manager:
You may or may not be aware that a number of communities in the seven
county Metro Area have passed ordinances forbidding trapping or the use of
the leg -hold trap. In most cases this type of ordinance has been passed without
input from the Department of Natural Resources.
It is the Department of Natural Resources' position that trapping serves
the community and wildlife populations in many beneficial ways. Trapping con-
trols the total number of a species so the population remains healthy. This
reduces the possibility of property damage and disease outbreaks.
Trapping provides recreation and a source of income for a segment of the
citizenry, generally young adults in need of this income. It provides for the
wise use of a renewable resource which otherwise goes to waste. The Department
of Natural Resources sets rather restrictive seasons on most furbearers thus
insuring the survival of healthy populations.
Should your city council consider an ordinance to ban trapping or use of
the leg -hold trap, we would appreciate the opportunity to testify on behalf of
the present system and to explain misconceptions and pitfalls of this type
ordinance.
Sincerely,
"e r/ . --
ROGER HOLMES, Chief
Section of Wildlife
RMH:pmt
cc: Director, Division of Fish
and Wildlife
Director, Division of Enforcement
AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER
