WWEHEAGE
Budget Manager
Attached is a copy of the Automobile Operating Statement for the Law Enforce-
ment Services Fund for the year 1979. The costs and revenues for Arden Hills
are shown separately, since they still own one of their own cars and the other
car was purchased from the Law Enforcement Services Fund in June 1979. This
means that only 6 months depreciation was taken on one Arden Hills car.
As you can see from the Operating Statement, the 1979 mileage charge ($.20 /mile
from January through June and $.23 /mile from July through December) did not
cover the costs of operation for 1979. There was a net loss of $8,400 for the
year.
Also attached is an estimate of costs for 1980, based on 1979 mileage figures.
We have been advised by the County Engineer that the cost of unleaded gasoline
for March 1980 will be $1.15 /gallon. In view of the great uncertainty of
gasoline prices in the future, we feel it is likely that gasoline will average
at least $1.25 /gallon for 1980.
Currently, we are billing the villages $.25 per mile. Tom Falvey has advised me
that, if we were to increase the mileage charge this year, we probably would not
do so at least until May 1, 1980.
Taking into account the above factors, along with 1979 experience, we have
prepared a report which indicates an estimated cost per mile of $.4005 for
1980. Based upon this report, the Budgeting and Accounting office recommends
increasing the per mile charge from $.25 to at least $.40, a 605 increase.
Correspondingly, the cost of unleaded gasoline the County purchases has in-
creased from $.62 per gallon in March 1979 to $1.15 per gallon as of March
1980, for an 85% increase.
If you have any questions on this matter, please feel free to contact either
Jim Schneider or myself.
JVH:JS :cu
Att.
cc: Larry Brown, Executive Director
Tom Falvey, Sheriff's Office
